Whitehorse catches me by surprise every time I listen to this album. I don’t know what is causing that, but they sound new every time I listen. I suppose that is a good thing, sounding fresh and brand new every time I play it. It is a good album, their first one. The guitar work is clean and sharp as tacks. I don’t have a genre to drop them into; Wikipedia lists them as folk rock, which works for me. They are a great harmony duo; their voices blend together very smoothly. I really should check out some of their other albums to see if they reach the lofty plateau I have placed this one on.

I also listened to a bunch of country music this week. We stopped in a second-hand store in the town where my mother lives, and I was able to score a couple of country and western cassettes. Yes, you read that right, cassettes. That format has not disappeared from my collection. I am still a huge fan of traditional country music. It is the music I grew up listening to on 790 CFCW and my Dad playing and singing. I don’t know if it defines my musical heritage, but it sure coloured it nicely. It was my only exposure to music until my teens, when I discovered 60’s rock and roll and moved my listening dial to 630 CHED.

Durand Bernarr released the album BERNARR. And I fell in love with it. I read a suggestion from another music lover on the blog On Repeat Records. I didn’t write down the name, but you know who you are, thanks. It is R&B with a twisted shot of funky hip-hop. Kyle Denis of Billboard stated in a positive review that Bernarr “expands the singer’s soulful, gospel-informed soundscape with splashy flourishes of yacht rock, P-Funk, house and Miami bass.” I can go with that.

Well, there we have it. It was a rather light-weight week in terms of quantity, but heavy-weight in terms of quality. Happy listening, everyone.
